The Department of Education proudly opened the 60th Annual Primary School Art Exhibition on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at the Bermuda Society of Arts Gallery in City Hall. This year’s exhibition, themed “Expressions from our HeARTS,” showcases the incredible creativity and talent of Bermuda’s young artists, celebrating their unique perspectives and artistic growth.
The impressive collection on display features student artwork from all 17 public primary schools, six private schools, and an alternative government school. As part of this year’s theme, the Primary 6 class at Harrington Sound Primary showcased a heartfelt tribute to the late Janet Niklaus, a former Visual Art educator remembered for her significant contributions to art education in Bermuda’s public school system. Additionally, the Primary 5 class at Paget Primary presented a posthumous tribute to Bermudian artist and sculptor, Chesley Trott, honoring his artistic legacy.
The opening ceremony honored the dedication of Visual Arts teachers who play a crucial role in nurturing student creativity. Certificates of appreciation were presented by the Commissioner of Education, Mrs. Kalmar Richards, and the Acting Arts Education Officer, Dr. Shannon Rose-Robinson. Additionally, in recognition of their contributions, teachers received a membership card to the Bermuda Society of Arts from its director, Ms. Nzingha Ming.
The Minister of Education, Senator Crystal Caesar, delivered inspiring remarks, emphasising the importance of the arts in education. Minister Caesar said “Art is far more than just part of a curriculum; it is an essential part of a child’s educational journey. It provides a constructive avenue for self-expression, fosters critical thinking, and enhances problem-solving skills. It is the cornerstone of a well-rounded education, shaping confident and creative individuals ready to navigate an ever-evolving world.”
The exhibition, which runs until April 7, 2025, is free to the public. Visitors can explore the artwork Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and on Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
The Department of Education encourages the community to visit the gallery and support the students who have shared their artistic expressions. Families, friends, and art lovers alike are invited to submit votes for the People’s Choice Awards.
