The Bermuda Housing Corporation (BHC), under the Ministry of Public Works, continues to make strides in addressing the critical need for affordable housing on the Island.
The Harmony Hall project in Paget, launched last September, is progressing steadily into its second phase. Construction of 12 rental units is now well underway.
Minister of Public Works, Lt. Col. the Hon. David A. Burch, OBE (Mil), ED, JP, MP, expressed his satisfaction with the project's progress. "We are very pleased with the work delivered by the contractors, who have consistently met expectations on time and within budget," the Minister stated.
The 12 new units, a mix of studio and one-bedroom apartments, are being constructed with accessibility in mind. Four of these units will be located on the ground floor and will include wheelchair-accessible features to accommodate individuals with disabilities.
The new units are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025 and will provide much-needed housing for individuals and families on the BHC waiting list, which currently has 200 applicants. Allocation of these units will be based on assessed need, with priority given to those facing critical housing challenges.
This phase builds on the success of the initial stage, which saw eight refurbished units come online earlier this year as part of a larger plan to deliver 52 units at the Harmony Hall site.
Minister Burch emphasised the importance of this initiative in alleviating housing pressures. "By increasing the inventory of affordable rental units, we are providing homes for Bermudians and easing competition in the private rental market. This, in turn, helps to stabilise rental prices and benefits the entire community."
The Minister further highlighted the broader impact of increasing the Island's housing stock. "Growing our housing inventory is essential to addressing Bermuda's housing challenges and ensuring our economy thrives by supporting population growth.
“Investments in housing may seem costly, but they are indispensable to the Island's long-term stability and prosperity."
In addition to the Harmony Hall project, the BHC offers a Private Sector Rental Programme designed to expand housing availability while easing the burden on private homeowners.
This programme allows homeowners to rent their properties to BHC under the corporation’s management. The BHC guarantees rent on time, proper tenant oversight, maintenance, and the return of properties to their original condition.
Minister Burch encouraged homeowners, particularly seniors, to explore this option. "This programme removes the hassle of tenant management and rent collection while providing peace of mind,” he added.
