Department of Culture Announces Writer-in-Residence Programme

Writer In Residence Programme

The Department of Culture, in partnership with the Bermuda National Library, is pleased to announce the next instalment of its Writer-in-Residence Programme Series. This year, the programme will feature award-winning Barbadian-British poet, novelist, and journalist Ms. Nailah Imoja, offering local writers an opportunity to refine their craft under expert guidance.

The programme, titled “Writing as Magic: Crafting Fiction from Concept to Creation,” will take place at the Bermuda National Library through a series of in-person workshops. Over three weeks, participants will engage in immersive sessions designed to enhance their storytelling abilities and creative expression.

The workshops will be held at the Bermuda National Library from Wednesday, 19 February to Saturday, 8 March 2025. Ms. Imoja, who has contributed to the Caribbean literary landscape for over 15 years, will guide participants through the art of storytelling, drawing from her extensive experience as a poet, novelist, and educator. Her works have been featured in numerous anthologies, and she is the author of thirteen novellas, including Pick of the Crop, published by Heinemann Publishing in 2004.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, the Hon. Owen Darrell, JP, encouraged writers to take advantage of the programme, stating, “The Writer-in-Residence Programme continues to provide an invaluable opportunity for Bermudian writers to hone their craft under the mentorship of renowned literary figures. We are delighted to welcome Ms. Nailah Imoja to Bermuda and look forward to seeing the creative works that emerge from this initiative.”

Participation in the workshop is free, but spaces are limited. Interested applicants are invited to submit a one-page writing sample, which may be a complete short piece or an excerpt from a longer work, via email to culture@gov.bm

The deadline for applications is 12 February 2025.
