Recently, the Department of Workforce Development celebrated the outstanding achievements of three exceptional individuals for completing an intensive training program, marking a significant milestone in their career journey.
In December 2023, the Department of Workforce Development launched a pioneering initiative to equip Bermudians with essential appliance repair skills. To that end, Eugenio Smith, Cole Durham, and Bradley DeSilva had the unique opportunity to undergo a rigorous 5-week Introduction to Basic Appliance Repair Course hosted at the Department of Workforce Development. This foundational course provided the participants with comprehensive knowledge of safety protocols, tool identification, basic repair techniques, and crucial health components of Appliance Repair Technology.
Building upon their successful completion of the Introductory course, Smith, Durham, and DeSilva embarked on a transformative three-week hands-on experience at Fred's Appliance Academy in Madison, Ohio. Facilitated by industry experts, this immersive program delved deep into diagnostic and repair techniques, empowering participants with technical proficiency, practical skills, and expertise in appliance installation, diagnostics, maintenance, and repair.
The dedication and commitment of these young men have borne fruit, as they have each received prestigious certifications, including the Appliance Service Fundamentals (AST), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA Certification 608 Type 1), and a Course Completion Certificate from Fred's Academy. Their accomplishments are a testament to their hard work and determination.
This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of partners—Gorham's Limited, Butterfield & Vallis, and W.J. Boyles. In collaboration with the Training team at the Department of Workforce Development, these business stakeholders have demonstrated a shared commitment to advancing appliance repair skills among Bermudians.
The Minister of Economy and Labour, Jason Hayward, expressed his pride in announcing the successful culmination of this collaborative effort, saying, "I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Eugenio Smith, Cole Durham, and Bradley DeSilva on their achievements. Their dedication and resilience serve as an inspiration to us all."
"This initiative underscores the government's commitment to providing relevant training and work experience for Bermudian youth while highlighting the importance of targeted training opportunities in high-demand occupations."
"I also want to show my deep appreciation to our partners, Mr Henry of Gorham's Limited, Jim Butterfield of Butterfield & Vallis, and Mr Boyles of W.J. Boyles, for their contributions to the success of this training and employment initiative."
"Fostering public-private sector engagement and pathways for Bermudians to secure meaningful employment opportunities are critical to the island's economic and social growth, helping create a brighter future for all.
