The Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ) of the Department of Environment & Natural Resources has begun essential work on its iconic North Rock Exhibit, one of the Aquarium’s largest and most beloved displays.
Now 30 years old, the North Rock Exhibit is due for a major restoration to ensure its long-term safety and integrity. The seams that hold the two large acrylic viewing windows in place have reached the end of their service life, and replacing them is a complex but vital task.
To safely replace the seam, the 140,000-gallon tank must be fully drained so the two main windows can be carefully lifted out by crane, the seal replaced, and the windows reseated. This significant project will protect the structure for decades to come.
The process has already begun with the careful removal and relocation of all animals in the exhibit, starting with corals and followed by the fish.
Depending on the species, animals will be temporarily housed in other Aquarium exhibits or holding tanks or released back into their natural habitats. Throughout the process, every precaution is being taken to ensure their health and welfare.
The main construction phase of the project is scheduled to take place between January and April 2026.
In addition to the North Rock work, BAMZ has also begun construction on a new habitat for Oscar, the resident American alligator.
His new home – located across the main walkway – will feature a larger pond and surrounding area designed to enhance both his welfare and the visitor experience. The move also clears space for the creation of an expanded, upgraded playground for families to enjoy.
“These important upgrades at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ) demonstrate our Government’s commitment to preserving Bermuda’s natural heritage and enhancing the visitor experience for generations to come,” said the Minister of Public Works and Environment, the Hon. Jache Adams, JP, MP.
“As Minister of Public Works and Environment, I am proud that we are investing in this iconic institution, ensuring that world-class care, safety and educational impact remain at the heart of BAMZ’s mission.
“I look forward to seeing the revitalised North Rock Exhibit and the upgraded alligator habitat open to the public, serving both our island community and visitors with renewed pride and purpose.”
BAMZ thanks the public for its understanding and support during this period of renewal and invites visitors to continue exploring its many other exhibits and programs throughout the coming months.
