The 2025 Bermuda Parish Garden Competition, held under the theme “Let’s Grow Together”, celebrated the creativity and dedication of local gardeners across the island. Initiated to encourage and recognise residents who cultivate gardens within their communities, the competition continues to promote healthier living and greater food security. Launched in 2022, this competition is now in its fourth year
During the Awards Ceremony, the Minister of Health reflected on the significance of gardening: “Gardening is more than a pastime; it is a powerful tool for improving health, strengthening food security, and fostering resilient communities.
“Around the world, we see its impact, and here in Bermuda, we have a unique opportunity to embrace gardening year-round as a means of ensuring fresh, nutritious food is accessible to all. As Minister of Health, I am deeply aware of the challenges we face, rising rates of diabetes and hypertension, an increasing burden on our healthcare system, and concerns about food sustainability. I also see tremendous potential. When more Bermudians engage in gardening, we take control of our health, our nutrition, and our future.
“Gardening puts fresh, wholesome food within reach, right in our backyards, on our patios, and in our communities. It reduces dependence on processed and imported goods, lowers the risk of diet-related illnesses, and fosters a culture of self-sufficiency.”
Spearheaded by Chaplain Dr. Kevin JT Santucci, facilitator of the Grow Eat Save initiative, the event was organised by the Department of Health and the Department of Parks. Running from February 10 to May 19, it featured five categories: Small Garden, Large Garden, Non-Traditional Garden, Community Garden, and School Garden, with 79 participants from across the island.
The Awards Ceremony was held on June 19, 2025, to honour the outstanding efforts of Bermuda’s green thumbs. The Garden Competition Winner was Ms. Nakisha Burgess, and the category winners were:
- Large Garden: Mr. Edward Ball
- Small Garden: Dr. Alshia Lugo
- Non-Traditional Garden: Ms. Frances Furbert
- Community Garden: Ms. Nakisha Burgess
- School Garden: Warwick Academy
Minister Wilson added: “It was great to celebrate and recognize the outstanding dedication and accomplishments of our residents who have embraced the many benefits of gardening at home, in schools, and throughout our community. Their commitment is truly inspiring, and we extend our sincere congratulations to everyone who participated.”
This year’s competition reflected not only vibrant gardening skills but also community pride, sustainability, and intergenerational learning.
