The Bermuda Gombey Warriors continued their FIFA World Cup Qualifying journey with a match against Jamaica on Tuesday, October 14, at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. The Hon. E. David Burt, JP, MP, Premier of Bermuda, and the Hon. Owen Darrell, JP, MP, Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport, were in attendance to support Bermuda’s national team and represent the Government of Bermuda. Though Bermuda was mathematically eliminated from the 2026 World Cup Finals, the Premier & Minister express support and pride for the efforts of the Gombey Warriors throughout their World Cup journey.
Premier Burt noted the significance of showing support at international competitions, stating, “Sport brings people together; it unites us as Bermudians and connects us with our regional neighbours. We stand behind our players and coaches as they continue representing Bermuda with determination and dignity. As the smallest country to take part in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, our players have acquitted themselves well, and we are hopeful for the future.
“While in Jamaica, I visited Parliament and met with Government and private sector officials, as Bermuda strengthens its ties with CARICOM. I also engaged with the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and incumbent Senior Ministers in addition to new Cabinet Ministers and Ministers of State, as we seek to deepen technical collaboration between our Governments.”
Minister Darrell expressed his continued pride in Bermuda’s athletes and emphasised the importance of sport in fostering unity and regional collaboration, stating, “Our Gombey Warriors continue to demonstrate heart and commitment on the international stage. Although the results for this campaign have not met our expectations, our team’s spirit and passion remain unshaken.
“This match in Jamaica has been another opportunity for Bermuda to shine, to build stronger sporting ties across the Caribbean, and to inspire the next generation of athletes back home. Support comes in many different forms, from cheering in the stands to showing up at home and abroad, and every bit of it strengthens our athletes’ confidence. Sport matters, not only for the competition itself but for the pride and unity it inspires across our community. There were many Bermudians in attendance, and it was great to see the support in the stands.”
The Premier and Minister return to Bermuda this evening with players and members of the Bermuda Football Association.
