Remarks Officially Unveiling Fire Safety Awareness Week 2025 Hamilton Fire Station

Fire Safety Awareness Week 2025

Good morning everyone,

Chief Fire Officer, members of the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, distinguished guests, and members of the public, thank you for joining us here at the Hamilton Fire Station as we officially open Fire Safety Week 2025.

This annual observance is an important reminder of our shared duty to protect lives, homes, and communities from the dangers of fire. It is not simply a tradition on the calendar, but a call to action that underscores the critical role each of us plays in reducing risks and safeguarding our island.

I wish to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service. Your courage, professionalism, and daily commitment to protecting this community exemplify the very best of public service.

This year, the theme of Fire Safety Week highlights an issue of growing importance: lithium-ion batteries and their use in our homes. These batteries power so many of the devices we rely on every day, from phones and laptops to scooters and power tools, but they also bring specific safety concerns if not handled correctly. Raising awareness about how to store, charge, and use these batteries responsibly can prevent accidents and, ultimately, save lives.

Fire safety begins long before an alarm sounds. It is about taking sensible steps, checking smoke alarms, having a family escape plan, and paying attention to how we use technology in our homes. By embracing these practices, we can build a culture of prevention that keeps Bermuda safe not only during this week, but throughout the year.

I encourage everyone to take part in the events planned for this week, to learn, and to share knowledge with your families and neighbours. The lessons we take from Fire Safety Week extend well beyond these few days.

And now, as part of this opening, I will read the official proclamation declaring Fire Safety Awareness Week 2025 in Bermuda.
