Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Week - Let's Empower Bermuda

sexual health

This week is Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Week which provides an opportunity to advise the public on the importance of sexual and reproductive health and the related services available to our community.

The Ministry of Health is dedicated to empowering individuals with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. Throughout Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Week, gift bags filled with sexual health information and supplies were distributed to select local pubs, clubs, and restaurants.

Year-round, Sexual and Reproductive Health Services, which comprises both the Communicable Disease Control and Maternal Health Clinics, offer a wide range of essential services, including Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) screenings, partner notification and contact tracing, cervical screenings, referrals for mammograms, pregnancy tests, maternal care and maternal yoga, and family planning services. This team also works closely with the community, providing sex education and collaborating with school nurses and various organizations to ensure everyone has the support they need.

Recent data from the Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, highlighted some key STI trends in 2024 and over the past 5 years. In 2024, Bermuda recorded 287 cases of chlamydia, primarily among individuals aged 15-29. This represents a slight decrease from 325 cases in 2023, however, between 2020 and 2022, chlamydia cases dropped from 240 to 183. Additionally, 2024 saw 41 reported cases of gonorrhea, with males making up 73% of these cases, and 8 new HIV cases, 75% of which were among men who have sex with men (MSM). For both gonorrhea and HIV, these are the highest reported figures since 2020. These statistics remind us of the continued need for awareness, prevention strategies, and accessible healthcare services for everyone.

Minister of Health, Kim Wilson shared, “The latest STI data highlights the importance of ongoing education, accessible testing, and supportive healthcare services. Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Week is a fantastic opportunity to address these issues and encourage proactive health behaviors. Remember, STIs often do not cause symptoms, so it's crucial to get tested and know your status to protect yourself and others.

“Taking control of your sexual health is an act of empowerment—knowledge is power, and prioritizing your sexual and reproductive health helps build a healthier future for all of us.”
