2023 Bermuda Job Market Employment Briefs
Today, the Minister of Economy and Labour, the Hon. Jason Hayward, JP, MP, released the 2023 editions of The Bermuda Job Market Employment Briefs and Tabulation Set publications from the Department of Statistics.
The 2022 Employment Survey reference week was August 28 to September 3, 2022, and the Briefs examine the employment changes between 2021 and 2022. In February 2023, preliminary data from the 2022 Employment Survey were released in the 2022 National Economic Report. The results provided an initial indication of a positive shift in jobs at the aggregate level.
The Minister explained, “The Bermudian labour market showed improvement in 2022 as the economy began to recover from the impact of the pandemic. Although job levels are still below pre-pandemic levels, I am hopeful this growth will continue.”
Some areas of note between 2021 and 2022 are as follows:
- Total filled jobs increased by 598 jobs to a total of 31,914.
- Filled jobs by Bermudians climbed by 227 jobs to 22,230, representing 70% of the total jobs.
- Filled jobs by Other Non-Bermudians (Non-Bermudians who are not Permanent Resident Certificate Holders or Spouses of Bermudians) increased by 359 jobs to 7,311. Other Non-Bermudians comprised 23% of total jobs.
- The median gross annual income for all job holders increased by 2.6% (+$1,763) to $68,599.
The four industries with the largest year–to–year changes in absolute numbers were reported by the International Business Activities sector (+282 jobs), the Accommodation and Food Service Activities sector (+221 jobs), Public Administration (-108 jobs) and Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (+83 jobs).
Minister Hayward continued, “Table 4 in the Employment Briefs serves as a tool for indicating jobs that are in demand and present possible job opportunities for suitably qualified Bermudians. The table shows Bermudians and Other Non-Bermudians in selected occupations and the percentage of jobs filled by Other Non-Bermudians.”
In 2022, some of the key occupations in demand that present opportunities for Bermudians include:
- Chef de Partie/Cook
- Accountants
- Actuaries
- Registered Nurses
- Beauticians
- Masons
- Underwriters
- Secondary Education Teachers
