Minister Owen Darrell Joins Murray McEwen’s 95th Birthday Celebrations at Pompano Beach Club

95th Birthday

The Hon. Owen Darrell, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, had the distinct pleasure of celebrating the 95th birthday of Mr. Murray McEwen, a long-time visitor to Bermuda, during a special family gathering at Pompano Beach Club. The occasion brought together 35 members of the McEwen family, spanning four generations, in a heartfelt celebration of a truly extraordinary life.

Minister Darrell, sharing his thoughts on the celebration, remarked, "It is not every day that you have the chance to celebrate a 95th birthday with someone as remarkable as Mr. McEwen. His love for Bermuda and loyalty to Pompano Beach Club is as enduring as our famous pink sands. We are delighted to welcome him and his wonderful family back to our shores—and, Murray, we’ll be keeping the seat warm for your 100th!"

Mr. McEwen’s connection to Bermuda runs deep. Over the past three decades, he has returned time and again to Pompano Beach Club, which he considers one of his favourite places on Earth. A world traveller and philanthropist, Mr. McEwen has graced the farthest reaches of the globe, from Norway to Antarctica, but he always finds his way back to Bermuda.

The family’s admiration for Mr. McEwen was evident throughout the celebration, with tales shared of his extraordinary life. A recipient of the Order of Canada and an Honorary Doctorate from McGill University, Mr. McEwen has devoted himself to causes ranging from clean water initiatives to child nutrition programmes and animal welfare.

Minister Darrell added, “Bermuda is built on hospitality and heart, and it is a joy to see Mr. McEwen surrounded by the people he loves in the place he loves. On behalf of Bermuda, we thank him for his decades of friendship and look forward to raising a glass again in five years’ time. Pompano, you’d better be ready for the centennial bash!”

The Pompano Beach Club joined Minister Darrell in congratulating Mr. McEwen on this milestone and wish him and his family a truly memorable visit.
