The Ministry of Education is proud to announce that the Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) has officially joined the Bermuda Public School System as a Learning Partner. The partnership between the Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) and the Bermuda Public School System was formally sealed with an MOU Signing Ceremony held at BHB, attended by Mr. Scott Pearman, President and CEO of BHB, The Hon. Diallo Rabain, JP, MP, Minister of Education, and Ms. Keisha Douglas, Principal of The Berkeley Institute.

As a Signature Learning Partner, BHB will support The Berkeley Institute’s Health and Social Care Signature Learning Programme, offering students valuable insights and experiences as a pathway to encourage young Bermudians to enter the healthcare industry.

The Hon. Diallo Rabain, JP, MP, Minister of Education, stated: “Through the Bermuda Hospitals Board’s participation in the Health and Social Care Signature Learning Programme at The Berkeley Institute, students are being offered a unique opportunity to engage with the healthcare sector. I extend my sincere gratitude to the Bermuda Hospitals Board, including its President and CEO, Mr. Scott Pearman. I also wish to thank all those who contributed to making this learning partnership a reality. These opportunities not only open doors for students but also strengthen the vital connection between education, industry and community.”

Within this Signature Learning Programme are the following Signature Strands.

  • Medical Sciences & Services Signature Strand
  • Social Sciences & Services Signature Strand
  • Holistic Allied & Health Care Services Signature Strand
  • Environmental Sciences Coursework

In the context of Signature Learning Programmes, "strands" refer to specialized areas of study or focus within the broader programme. Each strand represents a distinct pathway that students can pursue.

Commenting on the partnership, Scott Pearman, BHB CEO & President states, “I am very pleased to sign this MOU with The Berkeley Institute and the Bermuda Public School System for the Health and Social Care Signature. Healthcare offers students careers that are both challenging and rewarding. At present, about 70% of our clinical staff such as doctors and nurses come from overseas. As a small island nation, we will always value and appreciate the contributions of those who join BHB from outside Bermuda. However, we can do better in increasing the number of Bermudian healthcare professionals. Through this partnership, the BHB looks forward to supporting the Ministry of Economy and Labour to promote job growth here at home. We look forward to building a strong partnership with The Berkeley Institute, as a Signature School that will provide enhanced access, exposure and opportunities to Bermudian students to prepare them for leadership and professional roles in clinical healthcare in the years to come.”

The BHB joins a network of Learning Partners providing industry expertise to support students in the Signature Learning Programmes within the Bermuda Public School System. Through the Education Reform Unit’s (ERU) Learning Partnerships Workstream, the Ministry of Education actively recruits partners to enhance these programmes and Parish Primary Schools.
