Government recognises August PSEA Winner

PSEA Aug 2025

The Government is pleased to recognise the recipient of the August Public Service Excellence Award, Mr. Qshai Darrell of the Department of Works and Engineering.

Mr. Darrell is recognised for excellence in customer service in the care of a senior citizen, going above and beyond his job requirements to ensure her safe detour around a hazardous worksite.

The incident occurred earlier this year, as the Works and Engineering Highways Crew carried out planned roadworks. A senior was on her way to visit a private residence in the area when the crew informed her that vehicle access to the driveway was temporarily restricted. The team had just laid hot tarmac, and she was asked to park nearby and walk the short distance to her destination.

When Mr. Darrell noticed she was without proper footwear, he sought the senior's consent and permission and offered to carry her over the freshly rolled tarmac, safely delivering her to her destination.

The senior was so moved by his kindness that on August 17, 2025, she shared the story in a heartfelt social media post, publicly commending Mr. Darrell’s remarkable compassion and respect for elders.

On Friday, (12 Sept), the Premier David Burt, personally acknowledged Mr. Darrell’s chivalry, saying, “Mr. Darrell’s actions remind us of the compassion and integrity that lie at the heart of public service. His willingness to step in and help a fellow Bermudian in such a meaningful way reflects our core mission as an organization.”

Echoing his sentiments, Head of the Public Service, Cherie Whitter also shared her praises noting, “This is public service at its finest - quietly heroic, deeply human, and wholly dedicated to excellence in service delivery. Mr. Darrell’s example demonstrates what it means to exceed basic service standards, and we thank him for reminding us what it truly means to serve with dignity and respect.”
